History of the library
Where we have come from
IDLS was founded in the summer of 1999. The
service sprang from a simple question: Are there any documentaries
about children who use prosthetics?
After searching the web and communicating
with the International Documentary Association,DocumentaryFilms.Net
and other folks in the documentary community, it became clear that
there was no comprehensive listing of documentaries on the web or
anywhere else, and that a source like the IDLS would be valuable
to many people.
The web site and library database have grown
tremendously in the past three years. What you see today is our
first iteration as a professional web site.
The original prototype site was launched
in January 2000. The first extensive revision was launched in May
2001. Our final revision to the prototype was launched in October
2001. At that time the site was divided, creating a separate site
for industry members, and another site for public access.
New web site
This site, www.idls.org, was launched on
April 26, 2002 and continues with separate areas for public and
industry visitors. The new site is now on an industry standard development
platform. The database has been converted to SQL Server, with improved
performance. With this solid base of a professional technology platform,
we are poised to continue development of a robust service.
501(c)(3) approval
In April of 2002 we received our 501(c)(3)
approval from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. This allows us
to accept tax-deductible charitable donations from the public, and
to receive funding from other charitable organizations in the U.S.
